Table Linen - Napkins
Napkins
A napkin is a small square of material that is used for wiping hands and face during dining. It is also used for placing on the lap to preserve the diners clothing from any dropped food or drink.
The word napkin comes from the French word for tablecloth “nappe”. It is normally folded and placed to the left of the setting. Napkins are also folded to create a decoration for the place setting or held in a napkin ring.
It is believed that the napkin was first introduced at a finishing school for Ladies in London at some time during the 18th century.
